The Great Indoors Award is an international, biennial, interior design award that wishes to elevate interior design to the level of ’

mature discipline

’. The Award attempts to provide the interior designer with a platform of stature, as well as to prompt debate and disperse information on interior design. The aim is to reward excellence and, at the same time, to show this work to the world.

This edition’s theme is

The Nature of Things

, a study of the material and immaterial developments of interiors within a globalized reality.

Public space is being transformed into an endless interior. The character of these interlinked and mostly commercial interior spaces - where security, environmental control, and safety play a dominant role – can be regarded to a certain extent as being undemocratic. For example, these semi-public spaces hardly allow for social inclusion and have little or no interaction or integration with the surrounding areas.

Additional to these global societal trends - under the influence of current economic conditions - themes such as repurposing, sustainability, re- and upcycling play an increasing role in shaping the physical interior.

The Award will honor interior design projects in four categories:

•

Show & Sell

•

Relax & Consume

•

Concentrate & Collaborate

•

Serve & Facilitate

Only non-residential interiors or interior installations in one of the four categories mentioned above will be considered for The Great Indoors Award. Only projects realized between

September 2011

and

August 2013

are eligible for participation.

Every design submission requires an entry fee of EUR 100 (approx. 130 USD).
