The Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2027 competition is open for entries, inviting photographers worldwide to submit their best images of wildlife and the natural world. Organised by the Natural History Museum in London, the competition is now in its 63rd year and welcomes work from both amateur and professional photographers. Entries can explore animal behaviour, natural habitats, conservation and the relationship between people and wildlife.

The adult competition has 16 categories, covering everything from animal portraits and underwater photography to urban wildlife and photojournalism. A new category for 2027, Positive Action, focuses on successful conservation efforts, connections with nature and encouraging changes in how people engage with the environment. The Oceans and Wetlands: The Bigger Picture category now combines marine and freshwater environments. Younger photographers have their own competition, divided into three age groups: 10 and under, 11 to 14, and 15 to 17.

Adult entrants can submit up to 25 photographs across different categories, while young photographers can enter up to 10. The portfolio and photojournalist story categories require a series of six to ten images. Photographs must be submitted as JPEG files in Adobe RGB (1998), measuring 1,920 pixels along the longest edge. An international jury assesses entries anonymously, considering originality, storytelling and ethical photographic practice. Shortlisted photographs undergo further authenticity checks before the final selection.

Entry fee: £35 per adult entrant for up to 25 photographs. Entry is free for photographers aged 26 and under, including all young competition entrants, and for residents of 114 eligible countries, subject to the official rules. Young photographers aged 17 and under may submit up to 10 photographs free of charge.
